1999: McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church
Norman, Oklahoma
Built in 1924, the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church of Norman, Oklahoma, is constructed of massive Indiana limestone blocks. In a departure from traditional gothic architecture, which call for the major portals of cathedrals to face west, the sanctuary doors of McFarlin open to the south toward the campus of Oklahoma University. It symbolizes the church’s ministry to students and faculty, and the Methodist emphasis upon combining mind and spirit.
